Howdy Bodger. Thank you for showing an interest in the growth of the Bodgery! Below, you will find some options for an expanded and more functional woodshop. Even if you do not use the woodshop very often, I still suggest you take a look at these options as they have benefits and implications for the Bodgery as a whole. Also, please note that this initial phase of planning is really just about establishing a footprint for the new, expanded woodshop. Everything inside and outside of that footprint is purely hypothetical and does not necessarily represent a requirement of that specific plan. Also, all of these options allow for the creation of two new “zones” inside the woodshop, a very dusty zone in the current woodshop for the major dust creators and a less dusty zone in the new woodshop area for work that generates less dust. At the end of the page are a link to a survey form where you can send feedback to the board. You will also find the name of a new Slack channel where we can have real-time discussions about the Bodgery’s upcoming expansion as a whole. Now on to the proposals.
Option 1 (Truss 16)
Option 1 is to expand the woodshop into the west side of the shop and out to overhead truss 16. Truss 16 runs through what is currently the CNC area. CNC would move into suite B. Jewelry, Glass, and Leather would move into Suite B, but not necessarily as one shared space.
- Pros
- Expands the woodshop by roughly 108% (gross)
- Creates a finishing area outside of the woodshop that is accessible to the rest of the shop outside of the “dusty” area
- Creates a “dirty” classroom space
- New woodshop wall is built along a preexisting truss
- Leaves room for expansion of machining and metalworking
- Cons
- Less space for the woodshop to distribute and add features
- The included classroom is not enclosed
- Less woodshop studio space
Option 2 (Truss 16.5)
Option 2 is to expand the woodshop into the west side of the shop and out to the existing T-wall between CNC and Machining. CNC would move into suite B. Jewelry, Glass, and Leather would move into Suite B, but not necessarily as one shared space. Option 2 is currently the preferred option of the board and the woodshop area captains as we feel it is the most efficient use of the space, with option 1 being the next best and option 3 being the least efficient.
- Pros
- Expands the woodshop by roughly 135% (gross)
- Creates a “dirty” classroom space
- New “dirty” classroom is enclosed.
- Creates a “finishing area”
- Includes space for rolling cart storage inside the woodshop
- Increased woodshop studio space
- Leaves room for expansion of machining and metalworking
- Cons
- The new woodshop wall does not have a preexisting truss to utilize.
- The finishing area is inside the “less dusty” area of the expanded woodshop
Option 3 (Truss 17)
Option 3 is to expand the woodshop into the west side of the shop and out to overhead truss 17. Truss 17 runs through what is currently the Machining area. CNC would move into suite B. Jewelry, Glass, and Leather would move into Suite B, but not necessarily as one shared space. Machining would expand inward to the concrete wall that runs down the center of the shop.
- Pros
- Expands the woodshop by roughly 162% (gross)
- Creates a “dirty” classroom space
- New “dirty” classroom is enclosed.
- Creates a “finishing area”
- Includes space for rolling cart storage inside the woodshop
- Increased woodshop studio space
- Creates a dedicated woodshop storage space
- New woodshop wall is built along a preexisting truss
- Cons
- The finishing area is inside the “less dusty” area of the expanded woodshop
- Dramatically rearranges Machining
- Does not leave much room for expansion of machining and metalworking
Give us feedback!
We would love to hear what you think about these proposed layouts for the woodshop as well as your thoughts on the expansion in general. You can click this link to take a quick survey and let the board know your thoughts questions and concerns directly. And if you would like to join the conversation in real time, we have created a new #bodgery-expansion channel in slack to talk about all things related to the expansion. We can’t wait to hear from you!
